RATING
The genius of Malevolent isn't the voice acting, though it's fantastic. It's not in the sound design, which is top notch. It isn't in the subject matter, which is straight out of Lovecraft and thus destined to be popular. It isn't even the fact that everything in the show is done by one person. The genius of Malevolent is how *smart* it is in the way it uses the medium. With a blind protagonist and a voice in his head that has to describe everything to him, Harlan Guthrie perfectly inserts the listener in the action and deftly dances around the limitations of the audio-only format. Not just smart, it's bloody brilliant.
It would seem Harlan Guthrie has found the perfect storyline hook for a one man dialogue that takes Arthur and his passenger into the proverbial wolves' den, again and again. Five out of five, and if you haven't subscribed yet, NOW LISTEN HERE ARTHUR
MalevolentThank you!
I started off listening to the first few public episodes of Malevolent. When I caught up, I decided it would be a great time to up my Patreon pledge so I could have access to the weekly episodes for awhile at least. I've enjoyed being a part of the process (and the story itself), that "awhile at least" has become more permanent. Malevolent is an amazingly designed podcast that feels completely immersive even without the voting element. If I wear headphones, I will occasionally jump and turn around because it feels like the thing happened right behind me. But it's more than the sound design that makes this my favorite horror podcast. The writing and voice acting both make the characters feel real and believable, and there's just enough of a sprinkling of lightness to keep it from being *too* tense. While it does heavily feature Lovecraft horrors as the description says, it's definitely without the issues that have kept me from looking into Lovecraft now that I know I like horror. So prospective listeners concerned about that can rest easy.
MalevolentThank you Perrin! <3
you need to check out this show. seriously! stellar design, writing, and acting work together to create such a perfectly crafted atmosphere. suspenseful, chilling, and haunting in all the wonderfully right ways, malevolent grabs you, pulls you in, and keeps you.
MalevolentThanks Jess :)
This series manages to pull the listener into its atmospheric, dark world in such a clever and compelling way - a brilliant concept, gorgeous sound design (seriously!!!) and voice acting, wonderful writing, and such an obvious love from the creator for stories like this that permeates every aspect of the recording.Seriously, I cannot recommend Malevolent enough - if you enjoy anything spooky and mysterious, or just want to try listening to something new from a creator who puts so much effort into their work, you need not go further than the story of Arthur Lester.
MalevolentThank you Alexei!!!
The acting is good, the production is terrific, and the writing is okay. The conceit is really unusual, and the first episode hooked me in almost right away.Unfortunately, the story is pretty much formless. Apparently the writing involves some randomness (literally, dice-throwing), so the story occasionally lurches off of one track and onto another. This give the impression that there is no plot, just a bunch of creepy events loosely strung together.I looked ahead, and this drama is up to over 60 episodes at this point. I like my fiction to have a beginning, a middle, and, crucially, an END. I am so out!
MalevolentHey Sarah! Thank you for giving the show a chance! I appreciate your feedback and understand it's not everyone cup of tea! The podcast is a choose your own adventure so the die rolls are there as a w…
This show has some of the most distinct sound design I´ve ever listened to. I immediately immerse myself in this dark and scary world, following Arthur as he tries to solve mysteries and hauntings while being haunted himself. It leaves me feeling like there really is a parallel world where the world is a scary and horrifying place. Welll done!
MalevolentThank you so much!
Love the scary content. Harlan is great.
MalevolentYOU are great!
Good, really good. This isn't a garden variety horror audio drama. The voice acting, pacing, and sound quality are so well done that it needs to be included in the top tier of Lovecraftian media. Never would have thought the phrase I DON'T KNOW ARTHUR would be so impactful.
MalevolentThank you so much! :)
I am a big fan of audio dramas and this is one that has moved me to the edge my my seat during multiple episodes. If you like the feel of the Call of Cthulhu RPG then you will enjoy this. If you like suspense, you will enjoy this.
MalevolentThank you Mari ☺️
If you enjoy anything from the Lovecraftian mythos, you will absolutely enjoy this podcast! Harlan does an incredible job. It's atmospheric in all the right ways.
MalevolentThank you Liz!
One of the most unique and immersive shows I have ever heard. Incredible dialogue, immense tension, brilliant story-telling, and a way in which there is a narrator to the listener without separating the listener from their immersion into the story. Truly a brilliant idea that was executed to perfection.
MalevolentThank you!
Great show with dark atmosphere and superb character voices and sound scape.
MalevolentThank you David!
This podcast is incredibly well produced, with great acting and sound effects contributing perfectly to the creepy atmosphere. Highly recommended
MalevolentThank you so much!
I've just listened to the first episode of this podcast, and am blown away with the writing and the production. A snappy back and forth between two very different characters, a new take on the Lovecraft mythos to explore and a sinister mystery to solve. Great stuff.
MalevolentThanks barry!
Excellently acted with excellent sound design. Amazing for such a small project.
MalevolentThanks friend! : )
I was financially unstable, because my store got robbed; I went bankrupt. I tried getting my business back in shape through business loans; but all my applications were declined due to my poor credit score. I was looking for help online; then I came across positive reviews of 760Plus Credit Score on different credit forums. I looked them up and discovered they were highly rated, so I contacted them. I was amazed when I pulled my report after 11days: All my negative collections were cleared and my credit score changed from 590s to 780s. Thanks to you guys and I really appreciate it. This Podcast needs to come with a warning label because it's too damned addictive. I binged through their entire back catalog in a day and I NEVER. BINGE. SHIT. The story is told in a unique and fascinating new way and they pull it off with a flair of genius. I wish I could engineer sound half as good as these guys.
MalevolentHahaha Thank you!
Here you are, minding your own business, until one day you wake up on the floor, unable to see, and with a spooky new voice in your head giving you directions and telling you what to do - at least until you start arguing nonstop. Also there’s a missing girl, a whole bunch of scary monsters biting at your heels, an evil book, some shady cult shit that may or may not have something to do with your spooky invisible friend, and more than one dark and mysterious past to hide. Come join us in the Malevolent cult. New members are always welcome.
A Nightmarish TaleThis gripping story hits the ground running, pulling you right along our two confused and panicked main characters. The ambience and sfx are leveled nicely and do a brilliant job immersing you into the world of Malevolent. The voice actors themselves do a remarkable job creating an emotional depth to each of the characters through the fear, paranoia, and the faint glimmers of hope that are dangled in front of them. If you love eldritch horror or you are just a fan of audio dramas, then this is a must listen for you. I have been immensely enjoying this one and can't wait to hear how this all pans out! Great job all around!
