This podcast is a fabulous journey into the strange and mysterious world of audio fiction. If you like murder, mystery and mayhem alongside great storytelling and vocal talent this is the podcast for you. I look forward to new episodes and listen immediately!
I had very high hopes for this podcast. podcasts set in arctic or antarctic are usually superb - it's just such a fascinating setting for plot to develop. this one, however, deeply disappointed me.so far I've listened to 10 episodes, so this review doesn't pertain to the entire podcast, but I simply found myself unable to continue. I considered dropping it but decided to give it a chance and listen through season one to see if it gets better.my main issue is the characters. they are just walking stereotypes taken straight out of the brain of some 60's straight white pulp writer. the main character is your regular Brooding Mysterious Gruff Detective with a dark past (and a mandatory dead wife for character development). he loves his gun (which he is very proud to have sneaked into the station that has a strict no-gun policy) and he misses his vintage car. he is at least implied to be black (as he was named after bass reeves) and is voiced by the creator, who is extremely, undeniably white.female characters are just jokes. on one hand, we have a scientist with the worst portrayal of social anxiety disorder I've ever seen in fiction - literally as if a sixth grader read the first two lines on the wikipedia page for the condition and wrote the most clichéd character for a school assignment. the main character is naturally instantly enamoured with her.on the other hand, we have a nympho. that's it. her main character trait is being horny all the time, especially for the main character (of course). she has no personality beyond that. these are all the female scientists I've encountered in those ten episodes. all the other scientists are male. there is another woman who is essentially the help (manages the meals if I remember correctly) and is of course implied to be hispanic.of course there is a russian janitor who calls everyone "tovarishch". of course there are two IT guys who barely pass as people (they're into coding, so they're very weird, get it?) and say things such as "on shire and all tolkien things sacred!" (which could've been funny if done right and wasn't repeated fifty times). of course there is one openly queer character - a gay man who is proud to be hooking up with his undergraduates and insists everyone calls him "topper" (because he's a top, get it???). of course there are giant norwegians that act like dumb vikings and are absolutely fascinated by the main character, because he's "a real cowboy" (fuck, is this how americans view europeans? really???).also, pronoun jokes. very funny.genuinely, knowing the creator used to be on the king falls am team, and knowing the team split due to "creative differences", I'm not surprised there indeed were creative differences, if this is how trent shumway writes his shows. the premise of this podcast is so promising, and there are intriguing elements (demonic lawyer, woman from an alternate reality, mysterious murder), but they are smothered by the absolute shitshow that are all the characters. there genuinely is not even one likeable person.overall, this is the most stereotypically cishet-white-male fantasy of a podcast ever. I'll listen through season one and decide if it's worth continuing, but after what I've listened to, I'm not feeling very optimistic.
Love this podcast. Murder mystery with all sorts of other mysterious going on with some great characters. Season 2 was a bit slow with lots of character building but story kicks in with a real twist.
A lot of fun, very camp with a feel of eureka and x-files
Honestly? This podcast is hard to explain. Well organized chaos? I listened to the first episode thinking there was no way I would ever get through it and here I am 28 episodes later hoping it will never end.I can't figure it out, but give it a chance.
Spoiler Alert: there be monsters here!Class warfare! Demon lawyer! Trolls! Yankee-Ice Cowboy! Accordion cover of Rage Against the Machine!Murder!Mayhem!Nudity!Innuendo!
I've binged the first 13 episodes. What a deep, multi-cast audio fiction gem. As I listened I was naggingly reminded of the unfortunately ended King Falls AM podcast. Well, on closer listen to the episode credits I find voice actor Trent Shumley from KF AM is prominent in 90DS.
